Fernando Pessoa is regarded as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. He wrote prolifically under various pseudonyms and heteronyms: Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos and Bernardo Soares being the most famous. In 1917 he submits a poetry collection, The Mad Fiddler, to a London publishing house but without success. In 1918 he self-publishes the long poem Antinous and the collection 35 Sonnets and in 1921 starts is own publishing house, Editora Olisipo, which releases some of his English poetry in two volumes (English Poems I-II and English Poems III). The present edition opens with a famous epigram from Alexander Search and includes Inscriptions (from English Poems I-II) and all the sonnets of 35 Sonnets.
